    Some great tips there Gary! I bought a small basil plant on discount from a UK supermarket about 6 years ago i think. I have been propagating them since then. I put them in water for 2 weeks and then put them in 2 pint plastic milk bottles to establish and then transfer to our 25cm pot indoors. I have several in one pot and give away a lot. The leaves i remove when propagating, i dry off and take fresh from the big pot. I am just removing the garlic that we just inter planted with the tomatoes. I did save some spares for someone but as it has been some weeks now, i might plant them in the place of garlic so i can re start the process of propagating. I also tend to slow down propagating during winter months as they grow more slowly. If leave it too long the stems will get too big and harden off brown, so i try to keep on top of removing any leggy green stems. Anyway, Take care!

    Great video! I have not used basil cuttings to make basil vinegar but have steeped basil in olive oil to make basil olive oil. I also make pesto out of the excess basil cuttings and freeze in small canning jars. I add a little olive oil on top of the pesto to preserve color. It keeps in the freezer for at least 6 months.

    Thanks for the video- I’ll make sure to shade my basil as appropriate. Question: Do you have experience growing Everleaf type basil? It says it holds off flower production 12 weeks longer than other types. Would it still be helpful to prune to increase branching, so to speak? Also, does basil propagate from cuttings easily? How does it compare to starting from seed in terms of length of time until harvest?

    My basil gets Downy Mildew by the mid to late summer, every year. I’ve even planted the Eleanora basil which is supposed to be resistant to it, and it still got it. Do you have any recommendations with how to stop basil from becoming afflicted?

    It’s June 26 here in southern Colorado, Zone 5A-6B…. The temperatures here have been abnormally high for this time of year. We are in the high 90s and with this extremely arid climate my basil is struggling. I found if I shade them 80% of the day and water them moderately 3 times a day and fertilize once every two weeks, they are thriving… My Basil tries to flower even though the plants are not producing lots of leaves. Should I leave the flowers on? Thank you for your video Gary. Love from Colorado..🐝🏔️ 🪴

    Love the channel most of the time. But it’s demoralizing to hear a Gardner talk about using chemical fertilizer and pesticides. I know you know what this stuff is doing to the ecosystem. You shouldn’t be teaching ppl that’s the way to do gardening.

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN 6 часов назад

      Abuse is bad. Understanding them is important. Keep in mind not everyone can compost or afford organic fertilizers. As a teaching channel I want to present what is available. Most of the damage is from larger scale farms and lawns when it comes to fertilizers and chemicals. Not a home garden. But I understand your point. I hope you can see mine.

    I absolutely love your videos and the knowledge you share. You’ve inspired me and helped my confidence in growing and maintaining my garden. I was hoping you were talking about squash vine borers instead. That is my biggest issue here in Zone 9…Houston, Tx. I’m out there at least 3x/day hunting for eggs which are laid at the base and occasionally on the leaf stems. The adults fly quickly and rarely sit still long to be caught. The squash bug you’ve presented here is a problem on my tomatoes and cucumbers. Do you have a solution for the squash vine borers? Would love to know your thoughts about the Robber Fly. I’ve never had an issue with them until this year. Thanks so much.

      So glad to help. I have videos on them. SVB I dust the stems and keep planting squash over the year. I still lose plants but get plenty of squash. Do you use different ratios for different plants (cukes, squash etc)?

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN

      The same ratio should work. This is a lower ratio. But always test spray. The Rusted Garden Vegetable Seeds & Home Garden Supplies: www.therustedgarden.com Earn 15% and become a TRG Affiliate for our seed & garden shop Sign Up Here: bit.ly/4aarkDD

      I’ve already harvested most of my garlic. It seems to be about a month early for most people. I thought I should wait because it was too early, so I had 4-5 that were too ripe and had lost their skins. I wish I’d pulled them out a couple weeks earlier.

      @@Gardeningchristine Oh wow. I have to harvest mine asap. I see the yellow leaves but with the NY heat wave I've been watering the garden and had to wait until the soil dry out. I have my hardneck varieties scattered throughout the edible garden.

      @@naturalliving2011 you don’t have to wait for dry soil. You can pull them any time. Just make sure they have plenty of room when you are curing them so no mold grows. If they are damper than usual, then flip them every day or so so they dry evenly.

    Another idea. A girl at my work passed away, I took two large trays of my volunteer tomato starts into work with a nice sign to take a free plant or 2 if you want to grow one in her honor. They all got taken!

    Have you had any problems with vine borers on butternuts? My understanding is they don’t really bother them because they are a different species from summer squashes.

    The thermometer on my porch, in the shade, was 102F this afternoon. I don't even want to think how hot it was in full sun. Zero rain this month, and extreeme heat has everything dried out. It is the first time I've seen the grass die off since living in Sylacauga AL. To keep the garden going, I have had to switch to daily watering. The exceptions are my fruit trees which get watered every four days with the newest trees, two peach and a crabapple, watered every other day, and the GreenStalks and raised bed tomatoes watered every other day. No signs of fungi, and pest pressure is sunder control. I am harvesting something nearly every day, peppers, pole beans (red noodle beans this year), lemon squash, zucchini, cucumbers, and tomatoes. The Sugar Baby Watermelon aren't producing as much as I had hoped for, but the cantaloupe are doing great, with more female flowers for future fruit. I think the watermelon need more sunlight. I may try growing them in a different location next year, and double the amount 0f cantaloupe. The chicken run was delivered this afternoon. I'll inventory thre parts tomorrow, and assemble it Thursday and Friday. The chick's wings are fully feathered, and their tail feathers hacve grown in. They are making a mess, learning to fly, dust bath, and scratching the pine shaving bedding. I have to clean the waterer multiple times a day. One more week, and they go in the chicken coop. It is fully assembled, and the perimeter of its run is lined with concrete pavers.
